MODULE 1: MY FIRST BUY ORDER

Step 1 — Download Coinbase

Download the Coinbase app on your phone (iOS or Android).

Step 2 — Create your Coinbase account & Get $20 Bonus

Use this invite link to create your account and get $20 added to your account when you complete your first trade of at least $15: https://coinbase.com/join/8WW5BZM?src=ios-link

Step 3 — Complete KYC (Identity Verification)

Coinbase (and basically every U.S.-based exchange) will require KYC ("Know Your Customer") identity verification. This is normal and required for compliance. American laws require you to:

  • Upload your driver's license or passport

  • Complete a selfie / face verification

  • Enter your legal name, address, and DOB

Step 4 — Add a Payment Method (Bank vs. Debit Card)

You have two options:

Option A: Link a Bank Account

  • Best for larger purchases

  • Generally lower fees than a card

  • May take 5-7 days to clear (ACH timing)

Option B: Use a Debit Card (PRO TIP)

  • Instant buy — happens quicker

  • You can instantly move your cryptocurrency OFF after buying it into a cold wallet

  • Generally higher fees than a bank account, but the instant access is worth it

Step 5 — Place Your First Buy Order

  • Choose the asset you want to buy (example: BTC, ETH, or XRP)

  • Enter the dollar amount

  • Review the fees

  • Confirm the purchase

Quick note: Coinbase usually allows you to buy just about anything after it's already become big. It's not a place to buy coins at their inception, but it's a safe, quick, fast, easy way to buy with a debit card and instantly move it to cold storage. Something I still use most frequently.

MODULE 2: BUY FEES. SELL FEES. TRANSFER FEES.

Buy Fees

When you make your first purchase on Coinbase, it charges ~3% to BUY. If that's once in a blue moon, no big deal. The exact fee can vary depending on payment method (bank vs. debit card), order type, and market conditions.

Sell Fees

When you go ahead and SELL, they also charge you typically ~3% to convert it to liquid cash to get money off the exchange and send to your bank.

Swap Fees

When you "swap" one crypto for another (for example, swapping Bitcoin for XRP or XLM), there's a fee for that. You may pay a platform fee, a spread, and network fees. EXAMPLE: if you have $100 to start, you'll end up with a lower amount when you finally get over to XRP or XLM.

Gas Fees (Network Transfer Fees)

Gas fees are the fees paid to a blockchain network to process transactions.

Ethereum (ETH) Gas: Ethereum is notorious for high gas fees during network congestion. Wherever you have a digital wallet or even a cold wallet, you need to keep a little bit of Ethereum sitting there at all times — like having gas in your vehicle's tank. Never spend all your Ethereum. Always keep at least $20-$50 sitting on every cold wallet you have.

XRP (Ripple) Gas Insight: XRP has almost 0 fees and is making it hugely the number one choice for the global SWIFT money movement — the adopted blockchain solution for the banking system to switch off of the ancient, archaic, expensive, and slow system to the new fast and virtually free transfer.

Real-World Example (SWIFT / Contractor): It used to take four days for a foreign laborer in the USA — say a ROOFER — to send $10,000 to his family in Mexico, and ONLY sometimes 80% of the money would actually get there. Now with XRP, a person can send almost the entire $10,000 inside of three seconds.

MODULE 3: PUBLIC KEY vs PRIVATE KEY

What is a Blockchain? (Plain English)

A blockchain is a database (ledger) made up of "blocks" of data. All a blockchain is, is a transaction that happened at a certain time — like a journal entry for an accountant — and they stack those up. Once they get to say every 10,000 of those, they put those in a block and then just timestamp it. There becomes a chain of timestamped blocks with transaction recordings inside of them. That is the chain of blocks — or what people refer to as "the Blockchain." It's really not that complicated.

SHA256 Hashing (High-Level)

SHA256 is a cryptographic hashing function used widely in blockchain systems (notably Bitcoin). Encryption uses a long number of 256 characters as a hash method to protect sending, receiving, and value sitting on these blockchains. Hashing helps ensure data integrity — if the data changes, the hash changes.

Public Key vs Private Key

  • PUBLIC KEY: This is like your "receive address." It's what you can send or show people as a QR code to scan and send you cryptocurrency. It's OK to share that.

  • PRIVATE KEY: This controls access to the funds. You NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give away your private key. If someone gets your private key, they can move your crypto.

The Seed Phrase (12 Words) — Critical Security Rule

When you set up a digital wallet on Coinbase or Exodus (which is a very popular one and one of my favorites, very convenient — it just lives on your phone), you'll get a wallet to send from and receive with. When you set up the wallet, it's going to give you probably 12 words that you need to write with a pencil or pen somewhere — very slow motion, perfectly clear.

The Rules:

  • Write it down offline (paper or metal backup) — NEVER put it in a phone

  • Store it in a manila folder and put it in your safe somewhere where it can't be reached

  • Never share it with anyone

  • Never type it into random websites or send it over text/email

  • Write it down very, very slowly. Double check it. Triple check it. Then check it a fifth time.

  • Whoever has your seed phrase has the ability to control the wallet

If you lose these 12 words, you lose all your money that went into cryptocurrency, and no one can help you.

MODULE 4: COLD WALLET PURCHASE

Why a Cold Wallet?

Leaving your cryptocurrency on an exchange where people buy and sell is OK for a day or two, but you don't want to leave it there very long. A cold wallet (hardware wallet) keeps your private keys offline, reducing exposure to online threats (phishing, exchange hacks, malware, account takeovers).

Real talk: Hackers have been known to hit places like Coinbase for $40 million, and people lose their tokens or coins. Exchanges are convenient, but they are still third-party platforms. Holding larger balances long-term on an exchange increases platform-risk exposure.

Recommended: D'CENT Biometric Wallet

The best one we recommend with a biometric thumbprint scanner — which gets your cryptocurrency off all exchanges and onto your private device — is D'CENT. Definitely get one. Sometimes they offer a two-pack so you have a backup in case something goes wrong — you spilled coffee on it, the dog ate it, that kind of thing. Or you might want to split your holdings into two cold wallets and only hold half on each. Or you might want to buy the two-pack special they run sometimes and buy two of those for a total of four devices if you're running multiple private trusts that hold your assets in trust.

MODULE 5: FOUND MONEY! — HOW TO ATTAIN ZERO BUY FEES! (Save that 3%!)

The Idea: Reduce Recurring Buy Fees

Normally when you purchase cryptocurrency, it's going to be 3% to purchase it. So if you spend $100, you'll lose 3% to fees. If you're buying regularly, fees add up. A lower-fee route can act like "Found Money."

River Platform — Canonized Signup Link

One site I found in Columbus, Ohio allows you to dollar-cost average into Bitcoin — which you can then convert to anything you want. You can't always catch the high and you can't always catch the lowest low, but if you commit to buy at least $10 a month, they will charge you ZERO FEES.

SIGN UP NOW with "RIVER" — Canonized Invite Link: https://river.com/signup?r=EZFKLBUW

River Recurring Auto-Buys (Zero-Fee Feature)

  • River offers zero-fee recurring auto-buys when you set up an automatic recurring purchase of $10+ per month

  • Buy BTC with ZERO fees when you select recurring autobuy (daily, weekly, or monthly) of at least $10

  • If you're buying $10,000 a month — once, twice biweekly, four times weekly, or even daily — you won't pay the fees

  • On $10,000 you save $300! That could turn into millions on a new coin if you catch it early

One-Time Buy Fee

  • For non-recurring or certain transactions, expect a ~1.5% one-time buy fee

  • In 2026 Bitcoin hit upwards of $150,000. Now it's back to an 80% swing at $58,000. If you're buying one Bitcoin at $58,000 and save 1.5%, you save about $1,800 by buying it as a one-time buy on River. It's just the smart way to use Kingdom assets and be a good and faithful steward.

Double Purchase Feature

You can opt in to have them watch for the lowest Bitcoin price in a long time and give them permission to do a "double purchase." So if you're set at $10 a month, you'll get an alert that Bitcoin hit the lowest low in a long time and it'll go ahead and purchase $20 instead of just $10 for you. If you were buying $1,000 every week, it would double the purchase to $2,000 at the lowest low — which you're going to definitely want to do once you get into this world.

Additional Key Features

  • Works for Ohio clients (subject to River's availability and onboarding requirements)

  • Any wires over $10,000 are available for withdrawal from the platform same day

  • Not having to pay 3% fees on any of that is amazing, and you can typically move it off once a month at zero fees again

  • I think we both get $10 in BTC when you sign up — thank you ahead of time if you choose to use my link
